- Project Brief: A short text-based game about being an evil genius's assistant. This solo project was developed in only a couple of days for a game design class project where I was tasked with creating a text-only game. I designed, wrote, and coded everything in the project myself using the Twine engine.
This solo project was made for my game design class at university. I was tasked with creating a text-only game using the Twine engine. Using only text to convey the events of the game was a difficult task, but it was fun to create nevertheless. In the game, you step into the shoes of an evil genius' assistant, trying to keep your boss happy, and help him achieve his goals of world domination. I took the setting as an opportunity to poke fun at some of the "hero vs. villain" tropes often found in media, and made lots of comedic references to pop-culture hero and villain icons.

The game has 3 endings: good, bad, and neutral. The way I achieved this was that I made each choice branch off onto a good, bad, and neutral path of passages in the Twine engine depending on which dialogue option was chosen. I wanted to allow for a lot of personalization to the story for each player, so I made sure to almost always have at least 2-3 dialogue/action options in each event of the game.

I was also tasked with running a couple playtest sessions for this game with family and friends to ask some questions, and get feedback on the game. I was happy to see that the game was, for the most part, enjoyed by each of the testers who played. The most valuable feedback was for fixing bugs and typos that I wouldn't have noticed without them, and I'm thankful to have had such great playtesters who were honest and helpful with their feedback.

If I were to expand on the game, I'd flesh out some of the shorter events, and add a few of the events I ended up scrapping, such as "feeding the lab rats", and "filming the evil genius documentary". I feel the game is complete and is a nice length the way it is though, so I'm overall happy with the end result.
